Sun? Check. Pool? Check. World famous trichologist? Check. I am sitting with hair guru Philip Kingsley at his Hampton’s summer house, but sadly the only thing I can focus on is my increasingly unruly mop of hair. It is AWFULLY humid, as I have also heard it is in London. Lucky for me (and for you!), Philip has some great summer hair tips to combat the dreaded frizzies.
Why does our hair get so frizzy in the summer heat?
“Everywhere I go in the summer I see cases of frizzy hair. However, this is especially so when I’m in the Hamptons due to the humidity, sun, wind, pool and sea. I’ve seen many hair horrors here! Women, and men, tend to forget that they need to condition and take care of their hair as well as their bodies during bikini season!
Regardless of where you are though, summer heat is full of moisture and the moisture penetrates your hair strands making it go into its natural form. Unfortunately, most people’s hair gets frizzy in the summer depending on what type of hair they have and the length of their hair.”
So, what can we do to prevent our hair from frizzing?
“The best way to do this is to use anti-frizz products. There are many on the market, including my Weatherproof Hairspray. If your hair is frizzy, but also tends towards the limp side, Philip Kingsley Maximizer is also an excellent choice when used with a smoothing product on your ends. It will create volume at your roots, and keep your style in place. Another tip is to look for products containing silicones, which are usually under the heading of ‘methicones’. While too much silicone can make your hair look flat, a well formulated product will tame your tresses and keep it looking smooth and shiny.
It’s also important to remember to keep your hair hydrated and supple during the summer. Use a pre-shampoo conditioner at least once a week to protect your hair cells and to help keep your hair cuticles smooth.”
